Hand-lettered signs make memorable gifts for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, or inside jokes.
At smaller sizes like these (12x16" up to 20x30"), signs are drawn in white china marker & artists' pastel for permanence. The "chalkboard" is a beautifully smooth Super Black illustration board, perfect for framing.
This 12x16" hand-lettered chalkboard for the Trempe family was inspired by vintage Italian Gothic typography.
Another family gift chalkboard done in white china marker in a hand-lettered script, size 12x16".
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York City, honored (or spoofed?) in this 8x10" hand-lettered sign.
One of my recent favorite pieces, this 20x30" chalkboard was commissioned to decorate a home bar.

Tying the Knot: Chalk Lettering
Time-lapse of a hand-lettered photobooth banner I did for Briana Snyder Photography in March 2014. Materials: brown kraft paper, white chalk, (metaphorical) sparkles.
Historic Dayton Chalkboard
This was a piece created on my studio wall when we hosted the South Park Porch & Patio party in June 2014. It measures 5x7 ft and was hand-lettered over about seven hours. Crafted with inspiration from Sanborn insurance maps of the 1890s-1910s, this chalkboard represents my love for historic neighborhoods and the community around me here in Dayton.
Attitude & Effort
Inspiration chalkboard mural for a high school calculus classroom, approximately 3x4 ft. and sealed for permanence.
When Mr. Barrett and I were brainstorming ideas for this project, I asked him, "how do you want your students to feel when they're in your classroom?" The results speak to what great teachers do: inspire students and push them to achieve their best.

I think it's my favorite thing, hand-lettered chalkboards for indie retailers and businesses. Each one is a new challenge, and I get to build relationships with amazing go-getters & artists in my city.
For this pop-up card and party shop on 5th Street & Ludlow, the project included the logo and all in-store signage, including a 2x4 ft. chalkboard "balloon menu."
Hand-lettered signage illustrated on my studio chalkboard wall, then photographed and digitally edited for print. Posters were hung in the windows of all participating shops to promote the "2nd Fridays" event in Oakwood's business district.
After about 18 hours of hand lettering, plus coffee and croissants from the bakery next door, and this 6x12 ft chalkboard came to life.
Inspired by the RJ Designs brand, and the shop itself - from the soft coral walls and vintage zinc containers, to the swashy script of the logo - this was a fun opportunity to indulge in traditional scripts, flourishes, and illustrated florals.
Wishing Rachel all the best as she launches her new studio!
This hand-lettered chalk mural needed two days to install! I had such a lovely experience working with Jess and Bev at Sherwood Florist in downtown Dayton. I'd highly recommend their floral design workshops. Just the friendliest people and talented designers.
I had the opportunity to spend my birthday creating this eight foot tall chalk mural at the Black Box Improv Theater in downtown Dayton. I’m so grateful to Justin and Caitlin for choosing an excellent quote and then giving me free rein creatively. And for playing old school hip hop and 90’s rock to keep me going all day.
Dayton locals - you need to check this place out if you’re into theater or comedy or just, you know, nice people.
